This fall, Zagreb is the hub of scientific research and discussions on freshwater crayfish, because from 16 to 20 September, it will host the 24th Symposium of the International Association of Astacology (IAA24).
The Symposium of the International Association of Astacology has chosen Croatia and its capital as the host this year. Organized by the Croatian Ecological Society and the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb and with the support of the Alpe-Adriatours partner agency, this significant world scientific meeting will be held from 16 to 20 September at the Dubrovnik Hotel in Zagreb. It will bring together numerous astacologists – scientists specialized in freshwater crayfish research.
Freshwater crayfish are key species of freshwater ecosystems and are extremely important for their normal functioning. Unfortunately, they are very endangered and their protection is of paramount importance. Croatia is recognized as a “hot spot” when it comes to the diversity of native European crayfish since four out of five native European species are present in our waters. However, a worrisome fact is that the number of populations has decreased by up to 70% in the last hundred years.
This symposium will serve as an excellent opportunity to present scientific results, exchange experiences and agree on future collaborations. Special attention will be paid to the protection and management of native crayfish species, as well as threats from the spread of alien invasive species and the causative agents of crab diseases, such as crayfish plague, which these species transmit to native species.
The International Association of Astacology has a long-standing tradition (since 1972) of holding meetings every two years, with an average of more than a hundred scientists from all over the world. This year, the symposium in Zagreb has already recorded 126 registered participants from 24 countries from all continents, confirming the honor and significance of Croatia being chosen as the host.
In addition to the scientific aspect, the symposium will offer participants cultural and gastronomic experiences, showcasing Zagreb and Croatia in the best possible way through various activities.
