Cankarjev dom’s October marked by pressing social topics

Alongside a slew of international scientific congresses and conferences hosted by Cankarjev dom this autumn, the venue’s doors remain open for organisers of lectures, charity concerts and other events dedicated to the general public.

In recent years, the congress-commercial department established a fruitful cooperation with the Novak Djoković Foundation, helmed by Jelena Djoković, the wife of the Serbian tennis ace. They created the foundation in 2007 to invest in the early development of children and help change the world.

In collaboration with MVP production, the venue staged a talk with Mr. Gordon Neufeld, PhD, entitled: “Parent as the answer to a child’s needs”. Gordon Neufeld is an authority in the field of child development and the author of the best-selling book “Hold on to Your Kids”. He is also the mentor of renowned physician Gabor Maté, whom the public could meet in person last year, thanks to the Novak Djoković Foundation. Throughout his career, spanning four decades, he has worked with children, adolescents, their parents, and legal guardians. The lecture took place in the central hall of the venue, the Gallus Hall, a testament to the fact the theme is in the limelight globally.

Mental health is another topic discussed by an increasing number of people. Aljoša Bagola will talk to TV speaker Bernarda Žarn on the issue of his new book “No! Is power”. The presentation will take place on 19 October in Linhart’s Hall in Cankarjev dom. With his wealth of experience, Aljoša Bagola opens up pressing topics about the importance of mental health. He is the ambassador of the first Slovenian national campaign against the stigmatisation of mental health, made in partnership with the National Institute of Public Health.

Cankarjev dom hosted two charity concerts in October that filled Gallus Hall. They showcased there is still a sense of solidarity among people and empathy for those who need our help.

“OVITA zanjo” (Enveloped for her) is a project by Mateja Lasič, a medical assistant in gynaecology, who pairs her professional work with her love for music. As she stresses, surgery and her love for music represent her passion. Her mission is to ensure women receive quality care from dedicated doctors. Her project OVITA connected experts, hospitals, musicians and high-profile individuals to empower the general public and ensure the number of such diseases drops. The project contributed to the best possible evaluation, care and support for women who have been diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. All raised funds from the project and concert will be used for a campaign that will empower the broader public about these diseases, help support hospitals and the profession and contribute to purchasing medical equipment and surgical instruments needed for the quality care of patients with gynecologic cancer.

The charity concert Viljem Julijan 2024 is dedicated to children fighting rare and deadly diseases. The initiator of the concert is musician Gregor Bezenšek – SoulGreg Artist, the father of Viljem Julijan, who died after a battle with a rare disease at two and a half years old. In his short life, he became an ambassador for children with similar diseases. At this year’s concert, which included numerous renowned musicians, they helped raise 65,000 EUR. The funds will be given to children and their families battling rare diseases.
