Building a more sustainable
events industry

Sustainability has driven every Conventa event since 2009 to help promote regenerative and sustainable events.
Together with our attendees and partners, we take practical steps and implement measures to reduce our environmental impacts across mobility, venue, catering, energy, waste, and more.
Join us in making events smarter and greener for the future.

Laying the green foundations
Since 2009, Conventa has worked to make our trade show as sustainable as possible. Guided by our 7R model — Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Recreate, Regenerate — we introduced countless green practices. Yet, we faced recurring challenges: unclear reporting, imprecise carbon calculators, slow data collection, and no way to measure regenerative effects.

Building a Planet Positive future
From these challenges, Planet Positive Event was born — a methodology built on Conventa’s 18 years of experience. PPE delivers accurate measurement, streamlined reporting, external verification, and clear insights into both environmental impact and regenerative benefits. With Planet Positive Event, Conventa has moved from good intentions to measurable, transparent results — setting a new standard for sustainable events.

Sustainability at Conventa
How many tonnes of CO2 does Conventa Meet generate?
Conventa aims to reduce its carbon footprint in all segments. In 2022, the generated carbon footprint amounted to 275.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions. In 2023, the overall carbon footprint of Conventa was comparable to the daily carbon footprint generated by 5,415 inhabitants of Germany and equals driving 387,129 kilometres by car.
How do you measure the carbon footprint of the event?
Thanks to the Planet Positive Event tool and the tool’s carbon footprint calculator, we can precisely make the CO2 calculation. The emission factors, crucial for calculating greenhouse gas emissions, are sourced from reliable data collections like ADEME, BEIS, DEFRA, EPA, IEA, IPCC, EcoInvent, EXIOBASE/USEEIO, EPD, scientific studies, and concrete supplier data.
What measures do you take to reduce emissions?
Our guiding principle when organising Conventa is to satisfy the needs of attendees while reducing our carbon footprint and other detrimental environmental effects. In addition, we strive to leave the destination and event venue in a better state than before organising the event by developing new, innovative, sustainable solutions for Ljubljana’s meetings industry. We adopted transformative activities according to our in-house 7R model to encourage you to act sustainably: RETHINK – we respect legislation and rules, purchase responsibly, advocate sustainability and use the event’s recognition to promote events responsible towards the environment, society and attendees. REDUCE – we encourage sustainable mobility, reduce and separate waste, digitalise the event and strive to make it energy-efficient. REUSE – we prioritise reusable equipment, furniture and scenographic elements, selecting existing venues and measuring the effects of reuse. RECYCLE – we reduce paper use and strictly recycle all waste by ensuring smart management of catering and waste food and eliminating non-local food. REFUSE – we do not allow any discrimination regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, belief, culture or condition. RECREATE - we openly share the knowledge gained at the event and prepare an overview of new business models in event organising, content and sustainable organisation based on analyses. REGENERATE– we systematically encourage regenerative measures at the event and pledge to meet at least 50% of the 40 criteria.
Do all participants travel by train or other sustainable modes of transport?
We encourage all participants to use sustainable modes of transport to reach Ljubljana. Once here, we encourage them to reach venues on foot or by cycling to reduce the event’s carbon footprint.
How do you collect data from suppliers?
Thanks to Planet Positive Event’s 9 forms, we can easily collect the necessary data from suppliers required to precisely calculate the carbon footprint. The forms are the first of their kind in the world. They render the process of collecting information straightforward. You can learn more about the process on Planet Positive Event’s website: https://planet-positive-event.eu/.
Is Conventa creating carbon-neutral events?
Conventa strives to lead the meetings industry towards carbon neutrality. Conventa believes in regenerative events that leave destinations in a better state than before. However, we are careful not to use the term carbon neutrality. Large trade shows such as Conventa are nearly impossible to be carbon-neutral due to the mobility of attendees. Nonetheless, we have doubled down on our efforts to reduce the total carbon footprint and increase positive, long-term benefits for the local community.
